Miss North Carolina Amanda Watson’s appearance at North Rowan Middle School last Friday was the culmination of the school’s Red Ribbon Week celebration.
Watson was greeted with a red rose-sprinkled carpet and escorted into the school by Tobacco Club members who were “dressed to impress.” She was introduced by Principal Darrell McDowell via closed-circuit television and then spoke briefly in each classroom about the negative effects of smoking. She also emphasized the need to make good life choices.
The visit was designed to increase student health awareness, foster a positive school climate and provide an opportunity for students to interact with a positive role model. It also was part of the school’s effort to implement the goals and objectives of the 2009 school improvement plan.
Watson met local dignitaries at an 11 a.m. reception in the media center. They included Spencer Mayor Jody Everhart, Rowan-Salisbury Schools board member Jean Kennedy, Communities In Schools board member Eric Susong and Executive Director Vicky Slusser, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Dr. Rebecca Smith and North Rowan Middle School PTA President Dawn Holshouser.
Watson’s appearance came about through her involvement with Communities In Schools of North Carolina.
