Education: Histotechnology students to share lab with industry professionals

MOCKSVILLE ó Histotechnology students at Davidson County Community College’s Davie Campus will share their laboratory at 1205 Salisbury Road with industry professionals during a statewide automation conference Oct. 29-30.
The event, sponsored by Sakura Finetek of California, will feature the latest in automation instruments and methods that increase productivity and efficiency in histology labs.
M. Lamar Jones, histotechnology program director at DCCC and manager of anatomic pathology in the pathology department of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, will lead the session along with William DeSalvo of Sakura Finetek.
Hisotechnicians are licensed medical laboratory personnel who prepare tissue samples for microscopic review by a pathologist. Samples come from humans or animals during surgcial procedures, and they provide tools for diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases.
AP Scholar awards
Twenty-one Salisbury High School students have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of exceptional achievement on AP exams.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement.
Luis Andrade qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more. They are Luis Andrade, Ivy Brisbin, Morgan Griggs, Laurel Loeblein, Seth Morris, John Nicholson and Arielle Wright.
Three qualified for the AP Scholar with honor award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more. They are Steven Burges, Suncica Dragas and Michelle Nguyen.
Eleven qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more exams with grades of 3 or higher. They are Shea Comadoll, Andromeda Cook, Luke Fisher, Anthony Girelli, Olivia Goss, Paul Grant, Elizabeth Johnson, Lauren Shoaf, Garrison Stevens, Allie Wagner and Susan Wear.
Nine of the awards winners are sophomores or juniors who have at least one more year in which to complete college-level work and take additional exams.
