Kelly Renee Leach of Salisbury recently participated in the Governor’s Page Program in Raleigh as a page for the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
The program provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge of the roles and functions of state government. During the week, pages have a chance to attend press conferences, observe commission meetings and participate in a discussion with Gov. Mike Easley on current issues and events. Pages also assist in day-to-day office operations. Some of their responsibilities include delivering legislative bills, filing documents, assisting in mass mailings, answering telephones and delivering agency messages.
They also tour state government buildings.
Leach, daughter of Martin and Leisha Leach, is a junior at East Rowan High School.
Johnston Scholarship
William Spence Newsome of Rockwell is one of 39 freshmen to be awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s most prestigious need-based merit awards, the James M. Johnston Scholarships.
The freshmen scholarships are renewable for three more years of study.
All students with financial need are considered for Johnston Scholarships, but merit determines the winners. Awards vary among recipients according to need.
Johnston Scholars have numerous opportunities to widen their intellectual horizons and grow personally and socially.The awards are funded by the Johnston Trust of Chevy Chase, Md., founded by the late James M. Johnston, an Orange County native and UNC student (1912-15) who established a successful investment banking firm in Washington, D.C., and owned the Washington Senators baseball team in the 1960s.
Newsome, a graduate of Carson High School, is the son of Gay and Herbert Newsome.
