Bartholomew Award
Dr. Michael Baranski, a Catawba College professor of biology, was recently honored with the 2008 Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew Award by the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.
The award was presented during the society’s annual awards banquet in Spartanburg, S.C., April 18. It is given in memory of Bartholomew’s untiring service to the public, to plant systematics and to the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society to individuals who have distinguished themselves in professional and public service.
Baranski’s long list of accomplishments were noted during the presentation. He joined the Catawba faculty in 1974 and in 2006 was recognized with the establishment of the Michael J. Baranski Endowed Scholarship at Catawba, which is awarded to a student majoring in environmental science. He was also tapped in 2006 for Catawba’s Bashore Distinguished Professorship in Environmental Science. In 2002, Catawba named the lake in its 189-acre Ecological Preserve Lake Baranski in his honor.
Born in Wheeling, W. Va., he received his bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from West Liberty State College and his doctorate in ecology and botany from N.C. State University. He and his wife, Julia, have two adult children.

Bus ‘Roadeo’ winners
Roy Huss, who drive Bus 341 for Southeast Middle School, was the first-place winner in the Rowan-Salisbury School Transportation Department’s recent 13th annual School Bus “Roadeo.”
The event consists of a written test and a driving competition among school bus drivers for Rowan-Salisbury Schools.
Debra Safrit, who drives Bus 93 for Hurley Elementary School, was the second-place winner, and Lynne Purvis, who drives Bus 297 for Koontz Elementary School, came in third.
Huss and Safrit will compete with 30 other bus drivers at the district School Bus Roadeo in Concord April 29.
SkillsUSA winner
Rusty Metts, a student at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, was the first-place winner in the state-level SkillsUSA competition held recently in Greensboro.
Metts is one of three high school students in Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s Automotive Systems Technology program who placed highly in the competition.
Thomas Redmond of China Grove earned a fourth-place finish in the auto technician I category. He is a student at South Rowan High School.
Matthew Cress of China Grove placed fourth in the automotive service technology category. He attends Jesse C. Carson High School.

Johnson & Wales list
Seven local students have been named to the winter term dean’s list at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., for earing a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average.
They are Brittany Cilinceon, Mount Ulla; Caroline Holmes, Shauna Houston, Adam Ames, Sluckchith Douangphachanh and Courtney Sifford, Salisbury; and Cameron Kluttz, Spencer.
Hill places second
Jason Hill of Salisbury, a student at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, finished second in a regional welding competition hosted by the college April 18.
Eight community colleges sent their best student welders to show their skills in the seventh annual American Welding Society Intercollegiate Competition for the Carolinas and Virginia.
