Salisbury Academy holding book sale today and Friday

Salisbury Academy is having a “Gently Used” book sale today and Friday at the school at 2210 N. Jake Alexander Blvd.

Hours are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. both days. Customers should check in at the main office on the right side of the building. Proceeds will support the “Visiting Author” project.

There are books for children of all ages and some workbooks and textbooks.

Woodleaf citizens

Woodleaf Elementary School recently recognized the following students as January Good Citizens:

Kindergarten: Adrianna Blackstock, Nate Chastain, Elizabeth Long, Dustin Miller, Dalton Parker and Ashley Radtke.

First grade: Alexis Graham, Breanna Parker, Chance Ratliff, Dillon Simpson, Sean Turner and Cooper Wood.

Second grade: Trent Berry, Spencer Bowler, Stephen Donaldson, Savannah McNeill, Alicia Webb and Ashton White.

Third grade: Nicole Beaver, Madi Gibbons, Joseph Ketchie, Hayley King, Cody McCaleb and Madeleine Murphy.

Fourth grade: Marshall Ball, Mariana Camacho, Marcus Clonts, Breanna Lippard, Javier Ochoa and Vadessa Risner.

Fifth grade: Destiny Blackwood, Abby Leatherman, Hubert Ochoa, Bailey Stolsworth, Maricarmen Torres and Brooke Young.

Challenge finalist

Todd Facemyer, son of Joseph and Dori Facemyer, was recently notified he has been selected as a finalist in Nationwide Learning National Book Challenge.

A seventh-grader at North Rowan Middle School, Facemyer wrote and illustrated his own book, which he then sent to Nationwide Learning Inc. for publication.

All sixth- and seventh-grade language arts classes participated in the book publishing/ writing activity. When the published books were returned, Facemyer’s included a plaque and notification he was a finalist.

Winners will be announced the first week in May and will receive a $100 higher education cash scholarship. Finalists’ and winners’ books may be featured in catalogs and used to promote Nationwide Learning’s student publishing program in schools throughout the nation.

Saint Stephen’s honor

Stewart Dula of Salisbury was recently inducted into the Cum Laude Society at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School in Bradenton, Fla.

Cum Laude is a national organization modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, honoring scholastic achievement while striving to encourage the qualities of excellence, justice and honor. This society is restricted to schools of superior academic quality, and there are only 400 member schools nationally.

Dula is a senior at Saint Stephen’s and also attends the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton. He has also been named to the head of school’s list for the fall semester at Saint Stephen’s with a 4.7 overall grade-point average.

He is the son of Lynn and Fred Dula of Salisbury.

Davidson Who’s Who

Ashley S. Moore, a Davidson College senior from Salisbury, has been selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among Students at American Colleges and Universities.

Moore is the daughter of Sylvia Moore of Salisbury and a graduate of Salisbury High School. She is a political science major and John Belk Scholarship recipient.
