Six 2008 graduates of Rowan-Salisbury Schools have been named recipients of the 2008 PAPA scholarships.
PAPA (Principals and Assistant Principals Association) is an organization in the Rowan-Salisbury School System composed of principals and assistant principals who sponsor a scholarship program each year that recognizes one senior from each high school in the district. Each recipient received a $500 scholarship.
This year’s winners are:
– Jamie Rose Beinkampen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Beinkampen, East Rowan High School. A member of Students Against Drinking and Driving and the National Honor Society, she participated in East Rowan’s Broadway Review. She plans to attend Pfeiffer University, majoring in pre-medicine.
– Jordan Isabella Bost, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brent O. Bost, Salisbury High School. Captain of the varsity competition cheerleading squad, she was Key Club secretary and a member of Hornet Hype and Younglife. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and major in education.
– Michael D. Canon, son of Carol Canon, North Rowan High School. A member of the National Honor Society and Students Against Drinking and Driving, he is an N.C. Scholar and Honor Graduate and participated in indoor track. He plans to attend N.C. State University and major in engineering.
– Derek Todd Davis, son of John and Kim Davis, South Rowan High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Honors Chorus, Show Chorus and 2007 All County Honors Chorus. He played varsity football and basketball and was All State and All Conference and County in football and All County basketball. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and major in sports medicine and physical therapy.
– Katelyn Noelle Patterson, daughter of Donald Patterson, West Rowan High School. She was a member of the Student Government Association, Art & Diversity Club, Junior Classical League, Crazies, National Honor Society, Chess Club and cross country team. She has been a volunteer for Rowan Helping Ministries, Mount Ulla Elementary School, F&M Bank and Relay for Life. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Asheville and major in art education.
– Curtiss Jacob Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss Smith, Carson High School. He was president of his freshman and sophomore classes and also served as student body president and vice-president. He was the school’s team captain for Special Olympics and a Relay for Life volunteer. A Spanish Club officer, he was also a member of the Orange and Blue Crew Spirit Club, Men’s Varsity Cross Country, Raider Rowdies Spirit Club, Marching Band, Choral Music and Yearbook staff. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and major in biology and pre-medicine.
PAPA sponsored a silent auction of approximately 200 themed baskets donated from every school in the district at Carson High School that raised approximately $4,000 for the scholarship program. Student and adult groups provided entertainment.
UNC-Pembroke lists
Two local students have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for maintaining a 3.7 or higher grade-point average on at least 15 semester hours.
They are Carrie Sain of Mocksville and Christina Grandt of Landis.
Three were named to the honors list for maintaining a 3.2-3.69 grade-point average on at least 15 semester hours.
They are Codi Kohlmeier of Lexington, Allison-joy Fiello of China Grove and Justin Holt of Salisbury.
