DAR Good Citizens
The John Knox Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution has presented the 2007-08 Good Citizen Awards to Carrie Hoffner, Taylor James and Kendrick Miles.
They were selected by senior class members and faculties in their schools for showing the qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism in the school, home and community.
They will be honored Feb. 16, when they will share their essays at the DAR monthly meeting in Rowan Public Library’s Hurley Room.
Hoffner, a senior at South Rowan High School, is the daughter of Julie and Lonnie Hoffner. She is president of the South Rowan FFA and the Southwest FFA Region, has shown livestock at fairs and received “All American” honors in the 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc.
Hoffner is a member of the Student Council and student body secretary. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. She has received the Youth Service Above Self and the Rowe McNeely Animal Science awards. She plans to major in agricultural science at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
James, daughter of Adrienne and Walter James, is a senior at West Rowan High School, where she is senior class president. She is a member of the Junior Classical League, Environmental Club, National Honor Society and West Rowan Crazies and works for the school newspaper. She is active in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Youth Group.
James plays both varsity soccer and volleyball, was elected governor at the 2007 Tar Heel Girls State and is this year’s homecoming queen at West Rowan.
James plans to major in journalism or English at a branch of the University of North Carolina.
Miles, daughter of Robin and Sam Bannister, is a senior at Carson High School, where she is secretary of the National Honor Society and was chief junior marshal. She is a member of the Junior Civitans, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Orange and Blue Crew.
Ranked first in her class, Miles won the Gray Stone Chemistry Award and has been recognized as a Civitan Scholar. She has volunteered at the homeless shelter, nursing homes and Special Olympics and attends Covenant Baptist Church.
Miles was featured in the Young Artist’s Exhibit at Waterworks Visual Art Center and in Carson’s art show. She works with other students and performs in the Salisbury School of Ballet.
Miles is considering a career in law, philosophy, religion or education.
