Continuing ed award
Salisbury’s Chapter AX of the Philanthropic Education Organization has awarded Rahida Alexander a $2,000 award to continue her education.
PEOs raise money to give scholarships and grants to deserving women who are eager to further their education.
Alexander, a single mother of a daughter, Ayunna, 14, and a son, Emir, 18 months, is an ideal candidate, according to Joyce Ann Spiceland, chairman of the Program for Continuing Education who presented the check to Alexander at a recent chapter meeting.
Alexander studied for three years at St. Augustine College, in Raleigh before lack of funds interrupted her studies. She is now continuing her education through the University of Phoenix on line, making access to a computer a necessity. She has been using computers in the library or at friends’ homes. She plans to purchase her own computer with the award.
She is currently a technician at LabCorp where she was the technician for Terry Stevens. Stevens’ wife, Sue, will become state president of North Carolina PEOs in June.
“He was impressed by her capabilities, gracious manner, and compassion,” Spiceland said. “Terry had numerous appointments at LabCorp, always having the expert care of Rahida. Terry was responsible for recommending her to Chapter AX for financial help.”
Chapter AX plans to continue its support of this worthy young mother, she added.
