Concord man charged with arson in kannapolis house fire Sunday

Fire damages garage, apartment Sunday
KANNAPOLIS ó A Concord man has been charged with setting fire to a garage and the apartment over it Sunday morning at 1904 Cresmont Ave.Kannapolis Police Officer Brian Helms charged Levi Smith, 100 Wilkinson Court, Apt. 10B, with arson and breaking and entering of Billy Joe Smith’s home at 1904 Cresmont Ave.
According to the warrant, two people were in the apartment when the fire was set.
Firefighters responded at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and found a garage behind the residence on fire. Fire quickly spread to the apartment above the garage. Two occupants of the apartment escaped safely
Damage is estimated at $35,000. Smith is in the Rowan County Detention Center under $10,000 bond.
