CHINA GROVE ó A China Grove day-care owner was injured Tuesday afternoon when she was accidentally run over by her own pickup.
Diane Safrit, owner of South Rowan Academy at 413 N. Main St., was at her business and trying to back up her 1972 Ford pickup just before 4 p.m., China Grove Police Chief Hodge Coffield said.
Safrit, 58, of 411 Patterson St., stopped to put the truck in park. She got out, but the vehicle was not completely in gear.
“She tried to get back in,” Coffield said.
But she couldn’t get back in and somehow was hit and run over by the truck.
No one else was involved in the accident. Coffield said Safrit’s husband, Michael, came to the scene.
He was unsure of the extent of Safrit’s injuries, but said she was conscious and alert at the scene.
She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast complaining of pain.
Hospital officials said Safrit was in surgery around 6 p.m. Her condition was unknown.
