Staff report
Taking its name from the new brick-lined East Fisher Street, John Casey has opened the Brick Street Tavern in the former Las Palmas restaurant location.
His daughter, Jennifer, was a long-time employee of Las Palmas, which closed in January after two decades in operation. She is manager of the new restaurant.
Bobby Miller is a partner and bar manager. Wesley Stokes is another partner.
The Brick Street menu features Southwest favorites such as fajitas and chimichangas, along with other items such as steaks, seafood, wraps, sandwiches and burgers.
The restaurant has four chefs: Vernon Alexander, Jeff Swicegood, Jason Kepley and Brad Hodge.
A new 40-foot bar can seat 17, while the total capacity is 230.
The original hardwood floors were sanded and refinished to keep the feel of the Wallace building that dates to 1916. Woodwork and the walls were repainted and the upstairs balcony has a new look, too.
John Casey’s wife, Suzanne Wallace Casey, says her father, 96-year-old Leo Wallace, still remembers sweeping the floor of the building known then as the V. Wallace & Sons Wholesale & Dry Goods when he was a teenager.
The phone number for Brick Street Tavern at 122 E. Fisher St. is 704-637-6047. Hours for the restaurant are Sunday-Thursday 5-9:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 5-10:30 p.m. The bar stays open later each night.
