Author and actor Hill Harper will visit Livingstone College Friday and Saturday as part of the United Negro College Fund’s Empower Me Tour.
Livingstone will be Harper’s third stop on a national tour of historically black colleges and universities.
Harper is the bestselling author of “Letters to a Young Brother” and “Letters to a Young Sister.”
He’s also an actor on the cable television series CSI: NY.
On Friday, Harper will meet students from noon to 2 p.m. at Livingstone’s New Trent Gymnasium.
The Empower Me Tour also will bring a variety of exhibits by corporate sponsors that provide free give-aways and share information on scholarships, jobs and volunteer opportunities.
Students will also have the opportunity to register to participate in Wachovia’s workshop on Ways to Save a Million Dollars, take photos on the red carpet and share their experience at a historically black college via a video diary for a chance to win a one-on-one interview with Harper.
On Saturday, Livingstone will host “A Conversation with Hill Harper” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Varick Auditorium.
Afterward, Harper will sign copies of his books.
The Empower Me Tour aims to inspire and empower a movement among all young people, motivating them toward academic excellence and personal responsibility. “The tour also strives to teach them how to build wealth by saving and investing to gain access to more money in order to help others and build community,” according to a press release.
To attend tour activities, a person must register and receive a wristband.
People can register to participate in tour activities by going to the Web site, www.empowermetour.org/. The first 100 to register online will receive a free book autographed by Harper. Participants can also register at Livingstone College Friday and Saturday.
Primary sponsors of the tour are the United Negro College Fund, the nation’s oldest and most successful minority education assistance organization; the Wachovia Foundation; and Harper’s own Manifest Your Destiny Foundation.
Other sponsors are Amtrak, American Airlines, Ford Motor Company, FedEx, Teach For America, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, NAACP Youth and College Division and the S.E.L.F. Show.
