Authorities say an inmate at Piedmont Correctional Institution apparently committed suicide in his cell last week.
Officers at the medium-security prison at 1245 Camp Road discovered 39-year-old Shannon L. Weathers hanging by a sheet tied to a sprinkler head, the N.C. Department of Correction said in a press release Tuesday. The officers found Weathers around 6:45 p.m. Friday.
Weathers was serving a sentence of nine to 11 months for speeding to elude arrest, resisting an officer and receiving a stolen vehicle, the press release said. He was convicted in Gaston County.
The Salisbury Police Department is investigating the death, according to the press release. The medical examiner’s office in Charlotte is conducting an autopsy.
