ROCKWELL ó It wasn’t a truck that spilled a moped driver into the middle of N.C. 152 Friday night.
The culprit was a bottle of Canadian whiskey.
Brent Cecil Bingham, 47, of 4065 N.C. 152, Rockwell, told emergency personnel that he had been hit by a truck after he was found in the middle of the road around 8 p.m.
Bingham also told law enforcement officers the same story, but he later admitted to Trooper M. Easom that no other vehicle was involved in the wreck.
Initially, emergency crews had called for a medical helicopter, suspecting Bingham had sustained a severe head injury because his speech was so slurred.
Weather conditions prevented copters from Charlotte or Winston-Salem from flying.
Bingham was taken to Carolinas Medical Center ó NorthEast in Concord, where he told Easom that there was no truck involved.
Bingham, who was wearing a helmet, sustained a bruise on the head.
He was charged with driving while impaired and having an open container ó Canadian whiskey.
