Duard Cress has a riddle to go with his latest entry in the Post’s Garden Game.
His two potatoes with outgrowths that reminded him of ducks brought it to mind:
If you’ve got two ducks before two ducks, and two ducks behind two ducks, and two ducks between two ducks, how many ducks do you have?
Cress, who grew his odd-looking potatoes in his garden on Shue Road, said he’d offer someone who comes to the Farmer’s Market with the right answer on a sheet of paper a pound of tomatoes for free. He’s there selling produce on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
His daughter, Mary, helps out with the gardening. Cress said he’s got eight rows about 300 feet long filled with tomatoes at his plot near Knollwood Elementary School. He said he and his daughter have already picked the biggest portion of those tomatoes, and he hasn’t been able to sell or give away all of those, with about a truckload going bad.
He said he gave away a lot of tomatoes he had already picked last year to gleaners that provide produce to the needy.
Among his other offerings, he sold a 14 1/2-pound cantaloupe recently that was much bigger than the nice ones that usually reach about 10 pounds.
And he was also showing off a tomato that caught his eye. It has what he called a little worm appendage peeking out of the top.
