Staff report
BOONVILLE ó A Yadkin County man who works in Salisbury was on the way home when his pickup collided with a church bus near here.
Trooper J.L. Deal of the N.C. Highway Patrol told the Winston-Salem Journal that it appeared that Allen Groce, 23, had fallen asleep at the time of the wreck. Charges are pending.
Groce’s pickup collided with a Charity Baptist Church van loaded with teenagers and adults on the way to a Bible camp on the North Carolina coast.
The collision crushed the front of the van, killing Norma Shore, a youth leader who had helped the teens raise money for the annual trip to camp.
Six of the teens were admitted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Groce was also taken to the Winston-Salem hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
