JCL convention wins
West Rowan High Schools Junior Classical League won the overall competition with 903 points, and members came away with 14 first places and tied for a 15th at the leagues recent 56thNorth Carolina Convention at Wake Forest University.
The two-day event involved competitions ranging from Latin recitation, oratory, Latin site reading, arts and crafts, costume contests, writing competitions, Latin quiz bowl and academic testing. More than 850 students from across the state attended.
Josh Pond won first for having the highest score on the Pentathlon Test, a test involving derivatives, mythology, grammar, history, and Greco-Roman literature.
Jared Neal won first for having the highest score on both the mythology and history tests.
Daryll Moose placed first for Latin 4 students on the history, mythology and pentathlon tests.
Sam Daniel and Nate Lytle tied for first for Latin 2 students on the history test.
Thomas Langford placed first for Latin 1 students on the history test.
Luke Miller placed first for Latin 1 students on the pentathlon test.
Abby Bucher placed first in the large models competition with her Colosseum replica.
Morgan Grissom won first in the 10th-grade poetry competition.
Katie Ritchie won first in the ninth-grade creative writing competition.
Sam Daniel won first in the 10th-grade creative writing competition.
Felicia Housely won first in the 11th-12th-grade modern mythology writing competition.
Sam Daniel won first in the 9th-10th-grade modern myth writing competition.
Andrew Myers and Ryan Teel won first in the Romannewspaper competition.
Erik Cox won first in the transparencies competition.
Sam Daniel won first in the costume contest.
T.J. Leslie, Josh and JacobPond, Cameron Oliphant, Caleb and McKayne Hill won first in the classical movie competition.
The Latin 3/4Quiz Bowl Team consisting of Daryll Moose, Josh Pond, McKayne Hill and Brian Foley placed third.
The Latin 3/4 Quiz Bowl Team consisting of Jared Neal, Cameron Oliphant, T.J. Leslie and Abby Bucher placed fifth.
The Latin 2 Quiz Bowl Team consisting of Melanie Lippard, Nate Lytle and Caleb Hill placed third.
The Latin 2 Quiz Bowl team consisting of Morgan Grissom, Christine Lazina, Josh South and Sam Daniel placed fifth.
The schools Latin Skit, Orpheus and the Bad Day starring Jared Neal and Chealsea Sullivan, placed fourth overall in the Latin drama competition.

Enochville Wise Owls
Enochville Elementary School recently recognized the following students as Wise Owls for April for consistently exhibiting good citizenship, good manners and exceptional behavior:

NCCAT seminar
Nancy V. Broome of West Davidson High School and Sherry L. Wilhoit of China Grove Middle School recently attended a seminar at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee.
Graham appointment
Alisha Brooke Graham has been appointed chairperson of the Special Student Body Commission on Academics for the 2007-08 school year at N.C. State University in Raleigh.
The commission will work on behalf of the Student Body via the Student Government to ensure academic bills passed by the Senate and the university acts upon Executive Orders.
Graham will attend all Faculty Senate meetings and address the academic concerns of students to the dean of each respective college, the Provost Office, the Tutorial Center Administration and the advisors for each respective college. She will also work with the Office of the Student Body President to ensure the commission is performing in the interest of the Student Body.
She will be the sole charter officer of the commission and will report directly to the Student Body president. She was sworn in for this assignment to begin in the fall.
Graham graduated with honors from North Rowan High School in 2006 and will be a second semester sophomore this fall. She currently is a Freshman Senator for the Student Government and sits on several committees for the Senate. She has been selected to represent N.C. State as a University Ambassador and has also accepted a position with housing as a Resident Advisor for the 2007-08 school year.
She is pursuing a double major in political science and womens and gender studies with a concentration in law and justice.
She is the daughter of Deborah and Marcelle Graham and has a position this summer with the Rowan County Youth Services Department.
