Phi Beta Kappa
Lee W. Ballard, a senior from Salisbury, was recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa national academic honor society at Davidson College.
Ballard is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Ballard of Arbor Drive. A music major, he performs the violin as the concertmaster for the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the Methodist College Fellowship leadership team and studies abroad during his junior year in Wurzburg, Germany.
After graduation, he plans to return to Germany as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant in a secondary school.
He is also a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership society and Delta Phi Alpha national German honorary society.
Teaching Fellows trip
Nine rising sophomore Teaching Fellows from Rowan County are among the 500 to participate in the 20th annual Discovery Bus Trip across the state.
The theme of the seven-day trip is Future Teachers Explore North Carolinas Entrepreneurial Schools and Community Partnerships.
The trip is designed to broaden the perspectives of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows by introducing them to the economy, schools and people of North Carolina.
The local students and the schools they attend are Elizabeth Doran, Elon University; Garrett Fisher and Phillips Harris, Western Carolina University; Jarrett Lowder, N.C. State University; Nathaniel Lowman and Andrew Whisenant, Appalachian State University; Myron Massey Jr., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; JoAnna Reavis, University of North Carolina at Greensboro; and Joshua Van Eseltine, University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Ruritan scholarships
The Millbridge Ruritan Club awarded four $750 scholarships at its May meeting.
Recipients include Amber Himes and Jennifer Wherritt, seniors at West Rowan High School both of whom plan to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The others are Caleb Knox and Erin Morton, seniors at South Rowan High School both of whom plan to attend N.C. State University.
