Salisbury Police found a man in a creek after he allegedly robbed a Family Dollar store Monday afternoon.
Jonathan Grant Vernon, 41, of 240 Scrubb Pine Drive, Salisbury, was charged with common law robbery and resist, delay and obstructing a public officer.
Police reports said at approximaely 5:30 p.m. a man walked into the Family Dollar store at 410 E. Innes St. After a short time, the man got into a line as if to purchase something. When the cash register was opened, he grabbed a stack of $5 bills. The man ran toward Long Street.
Store employees chased him until he ran to a park near Shaver and Clay streets. Officers spotted him and told him to stop, but the suspect kept running.
He jumped into a culvert of water. Officers and a K-9 trapped him and ferreted him out, said Chief Deputy Steve Whitley.
Vernon received scratches and bumps while running and hiding in the ditch.
The stolen money was not recovered. Vernon remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $25,000 bond.
