Even after gardening for 72 years, James Brown has never seen a vegetable quite this odd before.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” he said. “It looks like a mama squash with little squash coming from it.”
Brown said that he and his wife go out to the garden every day to check on their dozen or so vegetable plants, and it was during one such trip that he found his unusual squash.
Gardening since he was 8 years old, Brown only stopped when he joined the Army at 20. When he got out, he missed gardening so much he went home and immediately began planting. He hasn’t stopped since then, he said.
What’s the big attraction? The exercise, he said, and being able to enjoy both eating and giving away the vegetables.
Brown bought his straight-neck squash seeds at Southern States and uses plenty of water and Miracle Grow. That, he said, combined with hard work and the pure enjoyment of it makes a great garden.
