Commissioner Jim Sides would like to get the Rowan County Airport out of the city of Salisbury.
He doesn’t want to move it. Instead, he wants the city to de-annex it.
Sides sees it as an economic development issue, since many of the airports in the region have lower tax rates than the county airport.
Airport consultants have previously told commissioners that the double tax ó both county and city ó can be a detriment to companies looking to locate planes or facilities.
Sides will discuss his proposal for de-annexing the airport at the Rowan County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday.
In other matters, the board will:
– Receive a first draft of a proposed agreement between the county and the Rowan County Fair Association for the management and operation of the fair for 2008-2011. County Attorney Jay Dees is scheduled to provide information at the meeting.
– Receive the annual report on the work of the Community Child Protection Team from Sandra Wilkes, director of the Department of Social Services.
– Consider appointments of commissioners to the Rowan County Tourism Authority and the Social Services Board.
– Receive an update from Chairman Arnold Chamberlain and Commissioner Jon Barber on a planned Transportation Summit. The event will be Jan. 30 and will include regional and state transportation officials.
– Conduct a quasi-judicial hearing for a conditional-use permit and rezoning of property at 8600 block of Woodleaf Road. The 8.5-acre tract would be split into 7 commercial lots.
– Conduct a public hearing on a request by Joel Stofford and Nikolaos Georgiou to rezone 3.72 acres from rural residential to commercial, business, industrial. The 3.72-acre tract is located at 1225 Peeler Road.
– Consider appointments to various board including the Landmarks Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Planning Board, Rowan County Rescue Squad and Land Use Steering Committee.
– Consider accepting a subdivision guarantee from Toyota Motor Sales for completion of roads in Competition Park off Peeler Road, a project being developed by Toyota Racing Development.
The company will provide a letter of credit to cover the costs. Engineers have estimated the cost at $735,000.
Acceptance of the guarantee will allow Toyota Racing to record the final plat.
The Rowan County Board of Commissioners meets at 4 p.m. Monday in the J. Newton Cohen Sr. Meeting Room, County Administrative Offices, 130 W. Innes St.
