MOORESVILLE ó David Wayne Moore always wore a smile and was polite to everyone he met.
Friend and boss Ecil Campbell, owner of China Grove-Landis Moving Company, said he was shocked to hear Moore died Saturday following a fight that ended when he was stabbed outside a Mooresville bar.
Moore, 40, of 185 Geiger Lane, Salisbury, died at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, hours after being stabbed outside Kenny’s Pit Stop at 128 Juniper Road, investigators said.
“He was a real good fellow. He was very polite to customers,” Campbell said. “It really shocked me.”
Campbell found out about his friend’s death early Saturday morning from Moore’s girlfriend, Dana Canterbury.
“He would do anything in the world for anybody,” he said.
Moore worked for Campbell about a year and, for a time, also worked for G&S Metal Heat and Air in Kannapolis.
The fight between Moore and another man happened around midnight Friday. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. Capt. Darren Campbell said investigators have identified a suspect, but no charges have been filed.
“We are in contact with the suspect,” he said. “We have interviewed the suspect and witnesses.”
The Sheriff’s Office is waiting for the Iredell County District Attorney to determine whether to file charges, he said.
Capt. Campbell said Moore and the suspect were “familiar with each other.” He declined to release details about the fight, including what the men were fighting about.
Moore was educated in Rowan County schools. He was the son of Donald Lee Moore of Landis and Eva Fleming Moore of Salisbury.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at Landis Baptist Church.
Family members could not be reached by telephone Monday.
