Wallace Commons, the planned retail development at Julian and Klumac roads near Interstate 85, will become incorporated into the city June 30.
Salisbury City Council approved Tuesday the voluntary annexation of almost 45 acres that will encompass the development, the first phase of which is expected to be built this year.
Retailers to commit so far include Home Depot and Kohl’s.
N.C. statutes require the effective date of an annexation be within six months of the date of passage.
City officials have chosen June 30 because the county tax assessor has requested that annexations become effective on either the last day of the calendar year or the last day of the fiscal year.
In other city business, council has approved a small construction encroachment under the sidewalk at 120 E. Council St.
Summit Developers is renovating the former Social Security Administration office.
Development Services Manager David Phillips said the encroachment is allowed provided three conditions are met, and Summit has agreed to meet those conditions.
The encroachment extends 3 feet under the sidewalk on East Council Street and 1 foot under the sidewalk on Lee Street.
City Council also approved a site plan for the construction of a mini-warehouse facility at 1208 Lincolnton Road, behind Walgreens.
The development will include seven buildings, 25 parking spaces, four loading spaces and about 88,003 square feet in all.
