Following national searches, Laura Herrick and Rebecca McQueen have been named to take lead roles in the Office of Student Development at Pfeiffer University.
Herrick, who was most recently career counselor for Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) was appointed director of career services.
McQueen, who served as assistant director of residence life for the Danieley Center at Elon University, is the new director of residence life.
As director of career services, Herrick, who lives in Harrisburg, will provide leadership for co-curricular initiatives related to student career development and the job search process. She will offer guidance in career and employment issues, provide career and job preparation workshops and activities for student groups and classes, and offer individual counsel.
In addition to her most recent role at RCCC, Herrick brings has held similar positions at the University of Illinois and Clemson University. She will begin her position on Aug. 3. Herrick received her master’s degree from Clemson University and her bachelor’s degree from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn.
McQueen, who lives in Misenheimer and began her duties on July 13, will provide leadership for residential students’ general success and personal development. She will help to create engaging and supportive communities in the residence halls, perform on-call responsibilities and develop appropriate policies for students’ responsibilities and rights within the residence hall community. She will also recruit, train and supervise residence hall staff members.
With experience in residence life, McQueen has previously held positions at Appalachian State, Elon University and Meredith College. She earned her master’s degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, and her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Office of Student Development at Pfeiffer provides programs and services designed to meet a wide range of student needs and interests. The staff focuses on the total growth of persons by providing co-curricular opportunities and services that complement students’ academic life and success on campus. The office also works to enhance and provide physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational and social development in a safe and secure environment.
BSN open house
Pfeiffer University will host an open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday for its new bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree program.
The event will be held for prospective students, guidance counselors, practitioners and those who want a first-hand glimpse of the new program and want to learn more about the university. The open house will be held in the Community Room of the Stokes Student Center on the Misenheimer campus.
Pfeiffer will begin offering classes for the new bachelor’s degree curriculum next month and it is expected to produce approximately 20-25 qualified nurses annually. The four-year, pre-licensure BSN program will be open to qualified high school graduates and college students who wish to pursue a nursing major.
It will consist of teaching and clinical experiences designed to prepare graduates to provide care to a variety of patients across the lifespan and diverse populations.
Dr. Dianne Yow Daniels, chair of the new department, and Dr. Mark McCallum, dean of the School of Natural and Health Sciences, designed the nursing curriculum, which is based on Christian principles and a patient-first, caring philosophy.
Sponsored by the Office of Admissions and the Department of Nursing, the open house will provide prospective students and interested participants an opportunity to visit the Pfeiffer campus and learn more about the requirements of the program, meet some university administrators and faculty, and ask questions. Participants will also attend a session about admission requirements, scholarships and financial aid, and get a tour of the program’s facilities as well as the campus.
