Suzanne Roakes, director of Rowan Public Library’s Books to Grow On program, offers these suggestions to help interest your preschooler in reading.
– Let your child pick out the book to read. Giving him this power helps him feel he is important.
– Read fast or slow, or even start at the back if your child wants to.
– Sometimes allow your child to make up his own story by looking at the illustrations.
– Model reading. Allow your child to observe you reading books, newspapers or magazines.
– Read with your child every night before bed.
– Take your child to the library.
– Encourage your child when she pretends to read.
– Let your child turn the pages.
– Be patient when your child interrupts.
