The dangers of social networking Web sites such as Facebook and MySpace will be the topic of a meeting Monday night at South Rowan High School.
The South Rowan High School Parent, Teacher and Student Association will host the informational session at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.
PTSA President Alicia Corriher organized the program in response to an attempted abduction of a South Rowan student initiated via the Internet in 2008.
Sgt. Ken Honeycutt of the Landis Police Department will lead the program.
Thanks to his group of Police Explorers, Honeycutt has been able to amass a functional knowledge of the dangers of networking sites. The Police Explorers are a group of young adults working toward careers in law enforcement.
Subjects that presenters are expected to focus on include the risks people face when hacking and illegally entering sites, according to Corriher. The difference between bridging and bonding should also be touched on. Bridging refers to loose ties people form through Web sites and professional needs, while bonding is the act of creating lasting relationships through actual contact and conversation.
Sexting, or texting between often anonymous individuals with intimate or sexual intent, will also be explained to the parents.
Benefits of social networking Web sites will also be discussed.
The program should last around two hours and is open to parents and families from other schools.
