From staff reports
Cam Sexton, who started six games at quarterback for North Carolina’s football team last season, is expected to announce Thursday he’s transferring to Catawba.
Sexton, who played at Scotland County High where Catawba has significant ties to the coaching staff, was 94-for-168 passing for 1,261 yards and nine TDs for the Tar Heels in 2008.
Sexton, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, is scheduled to graduate from UNC in May with a communications degree, but still has one season of football eligibility remaining.
Sexton announced in January he would not be returning to UNC and has been exploring Division II options.
Catawba employed three quarterbacks ó Howard Williamson, Patrick Dennis and Daniel Griffith ó last season and all three have eligibility remaining. Catawba also signed Shrine Bowl QB Brett Mooring.
n Pro baseball
Infielder Gordon Beckham, who made his pro debut with the Kannapolis Intimidators after being a first-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox last June, is a serious competitor for the starting second base job with the big-league Sox already.
The 22-year-old, who played at Georgia, batted .333 in his first eight exhibition games in Arizona and had three doubles in Sunday’s contest.
n A.L. Brown was running low on arms on the field, but it had two good ones in the stands watching Monday’s 12-4 loss to South Rowan.
Zach Ward (Minnesota Twins) and Garrett Sherrill (Milwaukee Brewers), star right-handers at Brown who have moved on to the pro ranks, will soon head to minor league camps ó Ward to Florida, and Sherrill to Arizona.
Ward noted that after numerous free-agent singings, the Twins have 23 pitchers in their big-league camp ó enough to fill the staffs at Minnesota and at Triple-A Rochester.
A handful of veterans likely will be released, but their still may not be room for Ward, who excelled as a starter in Puerto Rico over the winter, to make the Triple-A roster opening day.
Ward pitched well in Double-A last season, mostly in relief, but he could still end up as a starter.
n Senior Club
Kannapolis Intimidators have announced that the Senior Club, which debuted for the 2008 season, will return again this spring.
The Senior Club is geared for adults ages 55-over looking for a fun opportunity to get together at a baseball game.
n College softball
Gina Loflin (West Rowan) and Erin Foster (West) had four hits each as Walters State went 4-2 in a tournament in Alabama. Loflin had two doubles, while Foster had one.
