Salisbury Police officers will be out in force during the Fourth of July holiday period, cracking down on impaired drivers during the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign, the department announced today.
Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted throughout the campaign, which begins Monday, June 29, and ends Sunday, July 5.
“Too many people still fail to understand that alcohol and driving don’t mix. Impaired driving is no accident, nor is it a victimless crime. It’s vitally important that we bring this tragic situation to an end.” Chief Mark Wilhelm said.
In 2008, there were 377 alcohol related crashes in North Carolina during the week of Independence Day, resulting in 12 fatalities.
By following easy steps, Wilhelm said, drivers can enjoy a safe and festive holiday without jeopardizing their lives and the lives of others who may be on the road.
The steps are:
– Plan a safe way home before festivities begin.
– Before drinking, designate a sober driver and give that person your keys.
– If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely.
– If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement agency.
