Sloan Park hosted “Christmas at the Mill” on Saturday. Wreaths decorated the outside of Kerr Mill, and Christmas decorations were abundant inside.
Homemade chili, hot dogs, and other goodies were offered to guests as they took a tour through the history of the mill.
Allen Harris, who lives down the road from Kerr Mill, remembers coming there around 70 years ago with his great grandfather.
“It brings back memories,” said Harris. “You see it all and then you forget it and want to come back again. The last time I was here was around four years ago. I’ve forgotten a whole lot.”
Juanita Morrison, who grew up going to Patterson School, said she loves the mill.
“I think it’s great,” said Morrison. “It’s our history.
“Things like this aren’t made anymore. Looking at tools and everything brings back memories.”
Danny Rogers, a part-time employee with the county who works at Sloan Park, loves what he does, especially when special events such as “Christmas at the Mill” are going on.
“A lot of folks really look forward to it,” he said. “They appreciate something that has been preserved since the early 1800s.
“Our park is one of the best kept secrets in the area,” he said.
The park is open every day but Christmas, and dogs on a leash are allowed. The park has more than 97 acres.
