The Humane Society of Rowan County will hold a fundraiser Saturday in celebration of its 35th anniversary.
Scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. at VFW Post 3006 at 1200 Brenner Ave., the fundraiser will include a choice of barbecue pork or veggie burger plate with dessert and drink for $7, entertainment, door prizes and a raffle drawing.
Jane Hartness, president of the Humane Society, said the fundraiser will be a family-friendly event. Local singer Mary Beth Gillespie will perform from 6 to 6:45 p.m. followed by music by DJ Steve for the rest of the evening.
Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1 apiece during the fundraiser with the drawing scheduled for the end of the evening. Items to be given away include three half-hour massages donated by Salisbury Therapeutic Massage; a gift basket donated by A Step in Time antique and gift shop; a home and office gift basket donated by Cooper Advertising; and two clay gift pots decorated for Easter and filled with goodies, one for a cat and the other for a dog.
Door prizes donated by various businesses will also be given away throughout the evening.
The Humane Society was chartered in March 1974. Among its annual fundraisers are a spring yard sale, a fall spaghetti dinner and an October Lights of Love luminary event to celebrate the birthday of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals.
People may buy a luminary in honor or memory of pets or people to be placed around City Lake. The Humane Society also washes dogs the third Saturday of each month from June through September to raise money.
The objectives of the Humane Society of Rowan County include prevention of cruelty and neglect of animals, educating people on how to take care of animals and promoting the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats.
