The Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross needs registered nurses to teach its nurse assistant program.
The nurses would teach the Nurse Aide I class on a voluntary basis.
The certified program uses the same curriculum offered at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
The 132-hour class prepares students to test for North Carolina certification as a nursing assistant. Students who receive certification are able to work in nursing homes, assisted living facilities or on private duty.
The class is also a prerequisite for admission to nursing school.
“We don’t have funding to have RNs teach it. We are looking for RNs who are willing to volunteer,” said program administrator Amy McGuire.
McGuire is the director of health and safety programs at the Red Cross.
One instructor can teach 10 students. However, if enough nurses volunteer, students can be divided into smaller classes.
A volunteer teacher must be a licensed registered nurse.
Classes are conducted on Thursdays and a few Saturdays. Students will also have four days of clinicals at eight hours each day.
The class is new within the last couple of years. RCCC has a long waiting list, McGuire said. There is a fee for students to enroll in the class.
