Pfeiffer to start new science endowment
To pay tribute and recognize their combined 89 years of service and contributions to the success of Pfeiffer University science alumni, about 100 Pfeiffer graduates, students, faculty, staff and friends gathered to honor Dr. Michael Riemann, Dr. Clyde Robertson and the late Dr. J.O. Manly during a reception to launch an endowment campaign to honor them Sept. 26.
Riemann and Robertson, who both live in Stanly County, were honored at a special kick-off event held during Homecoming 2009.
Although future Pfeiffer students will not experience these instructors’ teaching methods, they will benefit from their legacies with three newly-funded programs that will bear the name of each.
To date, the campaign has raised about $45,000, and funds will be used to establish and support two separate student research internships for chemistry and biology-related studies to honor Riemann and Robertson, respectively.
Another award will be created to annually recognize the most outstanding student research project to pay tribute to Manly, who died in 1996.
The effort was led by a science alumni leadership committee that includes Joe Armstrong, Ph.D., of Westfield, N.J., and a graduate of the class of 1982; Maria Montoya-Couch, a 1985 alumna who lives in High Point; Pixie Gentle, a 1983 graduate who lives in Concord; Dr. Stephanie Ferri-Lewis, a 1994 graduate of Springfield, Mo.; Rick Tunner, a 1979 alumnus who lives in Hampstead; and brothers Dr. Patrick McGuire, a 1975 graduate, of Cullowhee, and his brother Dr. David McGuire, a 1979 alumnus, of Sylva.
