Staff report
CONCORD ó The Concord Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating a Friday-night traffic fatality in which a car struck and killed a pedestrian.
The accident claimed the life of Marcelus Stinson Jr., of 385 Church St. N., according to a press release from the police department.
At around 11:10 p.m. Friday, a 1998 Honda Civic driven by Sean Ramon Garland, of 177 Shamrock St. N.E., struck Stinson on Academy Avenue near its intersection with Glenn Street, the press release said.
Stinson died at the scene.
Current evidence in the investigation indicates Stinson was lying in the roadway when Garland’s car hit him, the department said. Garland took evasive action to avoid hitting Stinson but struck him with the left front of the Civic. There is no indication that speed was a factor in the accident, police said.
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or another impairing substance was a contributing factor in the accident. The N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office is involved in further investigation and a forensic autopsy will be performed on Stinson.
