In the midst of Easter egg hunts and time with family, it can be easy to forget the rules of the road.
The N.C. Highway Patrol is giving you a reason to remember.
The patrol is conducting an anti-speeding campaign to slow motorists and and reduce speed-related collisions.
Operation Slow Down, a statewide campaign, began March 30 and ends Sunday, Sgt. First Sgt. B.E. Hower.
“Speed remains the leading cause of traffic collisions and fatalities in the state,” Hower said.
The campaign started a week earlier than in previous years to get the word out before the busy holiday weekend that troopers are on the roads, he said.
“We do want them to drive safely, and that way maybe they can continue throughout the holiday,” Hower said.
Enforcement efforts will mostly be conducted on interstates and major highways.
Officials say motorists should:
– Maintain a safe following distance.
– Not exceed the speed limit.
– Not drink and drive.
– Avoid road rage with other drivers.
– Wear a seat belt at all times.
Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm said his department is not conducting an anti-speed campaign this weekend. City officers will be on regular patrol.
City police and other local law enforcement agencies worked together last week on a No Need 2 Speed Campaign.
Wilhelm advises drivers to obey the traffic laws, slow down, not be in a hurry and pay attention to what is going on.
