Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the Rowan County Confederate monument at West Innes and South Church streets.
The Robert F. Hoke Chapter No. 78 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy plans a special observance Saturday to mark the occasion.
The chapter will be host at 10 a.m. Saturday for a program in the Stanback Auditorium of the Rowan Public Library. The program will celebrate the monument’s birthday with a slide presentation on its history, and the chapter also will be observing Confederate Memorial Day, which coincides with the date the monument was dedicated by the Hoke Chapter in 1909.Saturday’s program is free and open to the public. The chapter encourages anyone with past photographs or articles on the monument to bring them for display before and after the program.
