The Rowan County American Legion team rolled over Duplin-Sampson 15-5 in seven innings in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament in Greenville this afternoon.
Trey Holmes hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to lead Rowan (28-6). Russell Michalec’s three-run homer and a two-run, pinch-hit homer by Casey Little in the seventh ended the game by the 10-run rule.
Corbin Shive, Parker Gobbel and Cody Laws handled pitching duties for Rowan.
The game was scheduled for 12:30 p.m. but didn’t get under way until after 1:30. Wilmington’s 11-7 victory against Shelby in the first game of the tournament took more time than expected.
Rowan plays at 7 p.m. on Sunday night at East Carolina against an opponent still to be determined.
