On Sunday, The LandTrust for Central North Carolina is hosting a nature walk on its most recent protected property, a five-acre tract adjacent to Morrow Mountain State Park.
The site boasts a large wetlands area, home to a thriving salamander population, as well as rare geological formations.
The hike will start at 2 p.m. from a volunteer’s home at 32365 Valley Drive, Albemarle, near the entrance to the park.
Those wishing to caravan from Salisbury should meet at the LandTrust office, at 215 Depot St. (The Historic Salisbury Station train depot) at 1 p.m. The hike will last approximately one hour and is appropriate for children.
“For the last year The LandTrust has worked with the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, the staff at Morrow Mountain State Park and the neighboring landowners to conserve this spectacular natural area,” says Jason Walser, executive director of The LandTrust.
Walser notes The LandTrust plans to transfer the property to Morrow Mountain State Park in the future. “Due to its unique natural communities, this will be a wonderful addition to the state park. However, the state park system was unable to acquire the property at this time, so The LandTrust served as the lead agency in the acquisition phase,” he says. “We are proud to participate in another project that will provide public recreation opportunities to the people of North Carolina.”
A grant from the Cannon Foundation and a large donation from a LandTrust supporter helped complete the acquisition, adds Walser.
