LANDIS ó Before the Monday meeting got underway, Mayor Dennis Brown swore in the town’s new police chief.
Brian McCoy, who officially began his new job Sunday, was sworn in with many of his family, friends and other law enforcement officers present.
The board also:
– Approved an Internet-use policy. Alderman James Furr submitted a draft of his ideas at the January meeting.
Furr said then the policy would be considered more of a technology policy and encompass more than the Internet.
A proposed policy was previously submitted to the board in 2007 but no action was taken. This proposal, which includes using objectionable language in a public or private e-mail message or playing games on the computer, passed with little discussion.
– Approved a proclamation that encourages Landis residents to observe the same principles to which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life.
Concord minister Roland Jordan asked the board for the proclamation at a previous meeting. Jordan also asked the board to consider having a street in Landis named after King. The board took no action on that request.
– Approved a scheduled two-hour power outage so Duke Energy could repair faulty switch gears.
The board discussed the time when most residents and businesses would not be affected.
Public Works Director Steve Rowland requested a weekend, preferably between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Rowland said it’s best the town schedule the outage this month.
He said he’d contact Duke officials to select a convenient day for all parties. The board is looking at the middle of the month.
The outages will affect different areas of town that run along two circuits. Rowland said he’d prepare a list of the affected streets in the coming days.
– Approved putting numbers on all town vehicles so they can be easily identified.
Alderman Tony Hilton expressed concern about police vehicles not having numbers on the roof in the event they needed to be seen from a helicopter.
The meeting was recessed until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall.
