The Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard assisted in a flag retirement ceremony Monday at Bethpage United Methodist Church in the Enochville community for Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 254. The Honor Guard executed a proper service for the retirement of some worn and tattered American flags by firing a 21-gun salute, playing Taps and carefully folding the flag. The Rev. Gary Guledge, a chaplain with the Honor Guard, explained the origins and meanings of the different services. The 21-gun salute, Taps and flag-folding are considered three separate ceremonies and are carried out before the final ceremony, the burning of the flag. Scouts were given the opportunity to place the 14 flags in the burn barrel. The ceremony comes as the nation prepares to celebrate Flag Day this Saturday.
