Kannapolis firefighter hospitalized with heat-related injury

KANNAPOLIS ó A Kannapolis firefighter was treated for heat-related injuries Saturday morning after battling a fire at 504 Hyde St., off Little Texas Road, according to a release from the Fire Department.
The department responded to a call about the fire at 10:34 a.m.
Upon arrival at 10:39 a.m. fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home. Firefighters quickly made access to the fire. They extinguished the blaze, which had spread into the attic.
Residents were not home at the time. The Cabarrus County Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
One Kannapolis firefighter was taken to CMC-NorthEast and treated for heat-related injuries.
Battalion Chief Tracy Winecoff wouldn’t say who the firefighter is but did say he was admitted to the hospital for overnight observation after complaining of chest pains.
Winecoff said fire inspector Shane Pethel is investigating the cause of the fire.
