Staff report
KANNAPOLIS ó Police are awaiting the autopsy report on a 6-week-old child to determine cause of death.
Sgt. Chris Nesbitt said police responded to a medical call at 636 Atlantic Court (off Rainbow Drive) shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
A child was transported to Carolinas Medical Center ó Northeast and died there later.
Nesbitt declined to identify the mother or child pending the autopsy results.
Nesbitt said the mother who had fallen on hard times recently had spent the night with friends at the Atlantic Court address.
Nesbitt said at this point police have no reason to suspect foul play. There were no signs of trauma.
The mother has another child who is older.
Nesbitt said investigators should have notified the Cabarrus Social Services Department, but said there is no reason at this point that the child should be removed from the mother.
