Girl struck by van in good condition

A teenager struck by a van while crossing the street Tuesday night was in good condition Wednesday, hospital officials said.
Christine Vargas, 17, of 423 Morlan Park Road, was crossing Jake Alexander Boulevard at its intersection with Morlan Park Road around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when she was hit by a 1995 Dodge Caravan, authorities said.
Vargas suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center and later transferred by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Acting Sgt. T.J. Crews of the Salisbury Police Department said Vargas was running across the road when the van struck her.
The driver of the vehicle, Shirley Ledford, 55 of Hickory, is not expected to be charged.
