Staff report
Firefighters responded to a fire at China Grove Middle School Friday morning.
The fire broke out in a mobile classroom before school started around 7:16 a.m.
Rowan-Salisbury School System Spokeswoman Rita Foil confirmed the fire damage was mostly inside the classroom, which was used for eighth grade social studies.
A custodian noticed the smoke and called 911, she said.
Foil said it appeared the damage could be repaired.
“We won’t know until they’ve had time to access the damages,” she said.
School was not delayed because the fire occurred before classes began.
“Most students were not on campus. The only problems were they had to block the roads around the school,” Foil said.
Some parents dropping off their children were delayed by the traffic.
Fire officials have not determined a cause, but say the fire occurred near a heating unit.
No one was injured.
