Faith briefs: Vacation Bible School starts Monday at Gethsemane Baptist

Vacation Bible school will be held 6-8 p.m. July 6-10 at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 719 S. Caldwell St.
Registration and an ice cream social will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the J. L. Stowe Fellowship Hall.
The theme is “Jesus Chronicles.” There will be classes for all ages.

Rockwell UMC
ROCKWELL ó Rockwell United Methodist Church will welcome its new pastor, the Rev. Warren Miller, this Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service. Sunday School will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Miller comes to Rockwell from the Albemarle district where he served at Porter-Randall United Methodist Church. He has a wife and two sons.
Rockwell UMC is located at 430 East Main St. in Rockwell.
Calvary Baptist”America’s Godly Heritage” will be shown at Calvary Baptist Church Sunday at 7 p.m.
This video sets forth the beliefs of many of the famous Founding Fathers concerning the proper role of Christian principles in education, government, and public affairs. The beliefs of Patrick Henry, John Quincy Adams, John Jay, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, George Mason, and many others are presented.
The film also provides excerpts from court cases showing that for 160 years Christian principles were officially and legally inseparable from American public life. It is not rated and will run 50 minutes in length.

Henderson Grove
Henderson Grove Missionary Baptist Church will conduct its annual vacation Bible school July 6-10 from 6-8:30 p.m. each evening.
This year’s theme is “Studio Go! Game Show: Real Teamwork, Real Service, Real Fun.” There will be daily lessons, games, crafts and refreshments. The students and their teachers will present their work to the congregation on Sunday, July 12, at the 11 a.m. service.
The Rev. Rodney B. Eldridge is the host pastor and Esther Mobley is the VBS director. The public is invited to attend.

Organ Church
Organ (Zion) Lutheran Church will have two special Independence Day services on Sunday.
The first service is at 8:30 a.m. in the Old Church. Refreshments will be available in the fellowship hall/shelter area following the service.
Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m., and the second service will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the New Church. Special music will be presented at both services by the Chancel Choir and soloist Lauren Thomas will sing “Star Spangled Banner.”

United Cornerstone
The United Cornerstone School of Divinity (UCSoD) announces its fourth annual baccalaureate service to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Candidates who have completed Ordination 100 and 200 and have passed the catechism exam with an 80 or above will be ordained as elders. These candidates include: Minister Darrell S. Houston and Minister Alice H. Perry, both of Salisbury.
The ceremony will convene at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Boyden Quarters, Salisbury. Dr. George B. Jackson, president of UCSoD will deliver the keynote address. Apostle James H. Carter, founder and presiding prelate of UCCI, serves as chairman of the UCSOD board of trustees.
The Rev. Evelyn Mattison Miller of Woodleaf has been named a President’s Scholar by (UCSoD) for the spring 2009 session.
Miller is currently enrolled full time in the Certificate in Christian Leadership curriculum and has maintained a 4.0 average. She is an associate minister at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Salisbury and secretary of the Salisbury-Rowan Ministers’ Alliance.
Refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately following the ceremony. The public is invited.

United Ministerial
The United Ministerial Alliance will sponsor their annual revival at Tower of Power Holy Church July 7-10 at 7:30 p.m. Speakers include:
Tuesday: the Rev. Cathy Marlin, associate minister of Fairview Heights Baptist Church; Wednesday: the Rev. Patricia Turner, associate minister of Tower of Power Holy Church; Thursday: the Rev. Evelyn Miller of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church; Friday: the Rev. Gena Long, co-pastor of The Potter’s House Church.
There will be a community mass choir each night.

Shiloh United
GRANITE QUARRY ó Shiloh United Methodist Church is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. H.L. Talbert as pastor by the district superintendent, the Rev. Sally Langford.
His first service will be Sunday at 11 a.m. The church will welcome him with a covered dish meal in the fellowship hall following the service.
Talbert and his wife have a son who is currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. He comes to Shiloh United from Rose Chapel United Methodist Church in Statesville, and received his Masters of Divinity from Erskine Seminary in South Carolina.
Mount Moriah
CHINA GROVE ó Mount Moriah Lutheran Church will have its annual Independence Day celebration at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Sunday school begins at 9:15 a.m. The dress will be casual and many will wear red, white and blue colors to honor our nation’s heritage.
Following the service will be a picnic lunch and fellowship. Everyone is asked to bring a picnic basket to share for an old-fashioned dinner on the grounds. The public is welcome.

Deep Impact
This summer, Joey Waters is serving with Deep Impact, a leadership team that will help lead youth missions weeks throughout North Carolina as well as East Stroudsburg, Pa.
This is a position offered through Baptist Campus Ministries of North Carolina and is sponsored by N.C. Baptist Men.
Waters is a junior at Gardner-Webb University. He is from China Grove, and is the son of Debbie Watts.
