RALEIGH ó Meredith Hovis and Christine Frankenfield, both of Salisbury, participated in the Governor’s Page Program in Raleigh. The students spent a week gaining valuable life experience and providing administrative support as pages for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources and the Office of State Budget and Management, respectively, for the week of Aug. 3-7.
“By participating in the page program, high school students from all parts of North Carolina have the opportunity to see first-hand how our government and government agencies work,” Gov. Bev Perdue said.
During the week, pages have a chance to attend press conferences, meet with the governor and assist in day-to-day office operations. Some of their responsibilities include filing documents, assisting in mass mailings, answering telephones and delivering agency messages.
Pages also tour several state government buildings, such as the State Capitol, Legislative Building, Executive Mansion, Supreme Court, Museum of Natural Science, Museum of History and N.C. Correctional Institute for Women.
Meredith is the daughter of Marcus and Vanessa Hovis and is a sophomore at Salisbury High School. Christine is the daughter of Sharon and Jack Frankenfield and is a sophomore at West Rowan High School.
The one-week program is open to high school students between the ages of 15 and 18, who are in good academic standing at their schools. National Home School Honor Society
Applications are being accepted for students wishing to be a part of the National Home School Honor Society, Eta Sigma Alpha.
Applicants must be rising 9th-, 10th-, 11th- or 12th-graders who are home educated. Students who have achieved national testing percentile requirements as set by the national group and who successfully complete an application packet will be considered for this year’s induction into the local chapter.
