Loose change collected at the entrances of Catawba College’s home athletic events will benefit several charities, including Rowan Helping Ministries, the American Red Cross and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Student athletes, representing Catawba’s 18 athletic teams, will be responsible for the collection in an effort led by Catawba’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Local fans attending the annual football game between Livingstone and Catawba at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 12, at Catawba’s Shuford Stadium will witness these student athletes collecting loose change at entrances on the home and visitor’s sides of the stadium. Catawba officials hope that fans will give generously, realizing that their small donation will add up to a larger collective total that will benefit local organizations.
“It is great to see our student athletes, our future leaders, conduct this campaign to help others,” said Dennis Davidson, Catawba’s director of athletics. “We see this as a learning experience that reaps rewards for all involved.”
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is comprised of two representatives from each of Catawba’s athletic teams and is supervised by Nan Whitley, senior women’s administrator and head softball coach, and Ginger Hamric, head volleyball coach. Last year, this organization conducted a campaign sanctioned by the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
