Education: DAR essay winners

Samantha Ann Washko and Kristin Michelle Harman have been named chapter and District IV winners in the American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The DAR promotes American history and good citizenship. The annual essay contest is open to students in grades five through eight.
Washko, a seventh-grader, was the first place winner at Salisbury Academy. Harmon, an eighth-grader, was the first place winner at Knox Middle School. Their topic was “The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address.”

Achievement academy
Matthew Fleming of Rockwell has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in science.
Fleming, who attends Erwin Middle School, was nominated by teacher Brenda Sloop.
He is the son of Jeff and Angie Fleming of Rockwell.
Dean’s list
Holly Irene Sexton of Salisbury was named to the dean’s list for winter 2009 at Savannah College of Art and Desdign.
Sexton, a 2006 graduate of Salisbury High School, is the daughter of Tom and Cathy Sexton of Salisbury.
Furman graduate
Kerianne Springer of China Grove is a 2009 graduate of Furman University in Greeneville, S.C.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Springer.
