Education briefs: Cannon School to collect for Goodwill

A Cannon School freshman is partnering with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont to bring a Goodwill truck to Cannon’s campus at 5801 Poplar Tent Road in Concord for a donation drive on April 20 and 21.
Thanks to Tyler Carson, a resident of Davidson, about 900 Cannon School students and their families will be able to donate items to Goodwill’s newest retail store, to open in early May at 5511 Poplar Tent Road.
Carson’s goal is to fill the Goodwill truck with donations of gently used clothing, furniture, toys, books and small household items. The public is also welcome to bring donations on April 20 and 21 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Goodwill representatives will be on hand to accept items and provide donors with receipts for tax purposes.
On April 14 and 15, three pep rallies will be held for Cannon School students. A representative from Goodwill, along with Goodwill’s mascot, “Smiling G,” will speak to children about the impact their donations make in the community.
Proceeds from the donated items sold in Goodwill’s 19 retail stores are used to fund job training and employment services for those who face barriers to employment such as lack of skills, experience, or education. Through February of this year, Goodwill has already served 65 percent more people than last year at this time.
