For a second year, a portion of the Salisbury Mall parking lot will be filled for several days in March with a temporary carnival.
Salisbury City Council approved Tuesday a request from KevaWorks Inc. to operate the carnival March 19-29 in a parking lot section near the Belk end of the mall.
Operating hours will be from 5-10 p.m. weekdays and noon-11 p.m. weekends.
The setup will happen March 16, and the tear-down will be March 30.
The carnival includes 12 to 14 family rides, five to eight games of chance and one or two food concessions.
The city’s Land Development Ordinance required council’s approval. A section of the ordinance says carnivals or circuses are permitted for a period not to exceed 21 days.
The carnival operators carry a minimum $1 million insurance policy. The Fire Department conducts an inspection of rides and cooking facilities before the carnival begins.
No alcohol will be sold. At least two portable toilets are provided. Health Department permits are obtained if they are required, according to the event organizer.
The carnival fits in a section of the parking lot measuring 175 feet by 200 feet. The games of chance, food, vendor and ticket booths are in the middle, with the rides on the outside.
