RALEIGH (AP) ó The top executive at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina says criticizing his financial compensation won’t solve the core problems of the state employee insurance plan.
Bob Greczyn spoke Thursday to a House committee before it again debated a bill to bail out the State Health Plan. The proposal calls for higher premiums and eroded benefits, and would cost taxpayers at least $650 million over the next two years.
Blue Cross administers the State Health Plan, which has 667,000 members.
The State Employees Association of North Carolina has criticized lawmakers for not seeking concessions from the company when Greczyn received nearly $4 million last year. But Greczyn said cutting their contract price by 10 percent would put 120 Blue Cross jobs at risk.
